Clematis alpina

Small nodding, mid-blue flowers with cream staminodes, white filaments and pale yellow anthers. Introduced into the UK from Europe in 1792 according to Whitehead (1959) although Johnson finds an earlier description in 1768. Given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Merit in 1894, 1965 and the Award of Garden Merit in 1993.

In 1912, William Robinson writes in his book 'The Virgin's Bower', "A hardy, early and often neglected kind..."
