Clematis 'La France'

Large flowers of deep, glossy violet-purple with purple-brown anthers. Bred by Gégu, Anders, France around 1886. This cultivar is mentioned by Markham (1935) and Whitehead (1959) but now appears to be lost from cultivation - please contact us if you know otherwise. William Robinson writes in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' (1912), "The beauty of [this hybrid] cannot be described in words."
