Clematis 'Jeanne d'Arc'
Large grey-white flowers with bluish midribs. Pale yellow anthers. Early flowers on old wood sometimes semi-double. This cultivar was mentioned by Riekstina (1990) but appeared to be lost from cultivation in the West. We have now been in touch with Ilmars Riekstin who confirms that Laumas Arboretum has a thriving 'Jeanne d'Arc' (see photographs). He was unaware that this was a 'rare' specimen and now intends to propagate it in order to preserve the form. In 1912, William Robinson in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' lists this cultivar as "trusted to give lovely effects if culture and position be all [it] deserves."
