Clematis on the Web :: clematis detail
Clematis 'Prince of Wales'

Purple-violet flowers with dark red central bar. Green filaments. The last listing given by Magnus Johnson for this cultivar is in 1935 (actually 1959, but this last reference is in error), Riekstina has the name on a list of 77 cultivars introduced into Latvia between 1870 and 1910. We had thought this cultivar lost, but our regular contributor Susan Wilson recently found a plant alive and well in Shrewsbury, UK labelled 'Prince of Wales' (see photo). It is not yet clear whether this is the 'real thing'.
