Clematis japonica 'Gokanosho'
Brownish-red flowers. The distinguishing feature of this form is its variegated leaves, spalshed and mottled with creamy white and pale green, some divided down the centre into two distinct colours. The variegation tends to be unstable and may revert to green. The International Clematis Register and Checklist 2002 notes that this form is 'thought to have been found in the district called Goka no shoo, near Kumamota City in Japan by Tetsushi Shiraishi'. Barry Fretwell's website says that the form was sent to him in 1985 by Takashi Shiraishi.
