Clematis 'Modesta'

Pale blue flowers with a darker bar and veins.

The texts on 'Modesta are confused and different authors may be referring to different cultivars. The International Clematis Register and Checklist 2002 says "Le Bêle 1896:50 has [Modesta] as a synonym of 'Jackmanii Violacea', with deep violet sepals that become bright violet. Jouin 1907:232 says the sepals are lilac-red changing to pale violet. Later books such as Markham 1935 and Whitehead 1959 say the flowers are clear violet. The suggestion that this cv is the same as 'Prince Charles' has not been substantiated." See the entry for 'Prince Charles' for that story!
