Clematis 'Sophia Plena'

Semi-double lilac-purple flowers with a greenish bar. This form is thought lost to cultivation.

This is a Japanese cultivar that was sent to Siebold in Leiden by Textor, a plant hunter. The name is in honour of the Dutch Queen Sophie of Würtenberg. The International Clematis Register and Checklist 2002 inexplicably says that the form is a seedling or selection from 'Sophia' but the reference given does not seem to support this.
