Clematis 'Rüütel'

Large to very large, beetroot-red flowers with purple or pale purple filaments and brown anthers. 'Rüütel', means 'Knight'. (Magnus Johnson in The Genus Clematis quotes a Kivistik catalog as saying that the parentage is 'Ernest Markham' x free pollination; the International Clematis Register and Checklist, quoting Riekstina & Radina, says that the second parent is 'Valge Daam'.) Arnold Rüütel (b. 1928) was Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Estonia from 1990-1992 and served as president of the Republic of Estonia from 2001-2006.
