Clematis 'Star of India' (Cripps - UK)

Large reddish-purple semi-nodding flowers with a vivid red bar. Greenish-cream stamens. In 1912, William Robinson in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' lists this cultivar as "trusted to give lovely effects if culture and position be all [it] deserves." The variety received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993. This is the form widely available in the west, not to be confused with 'Star of India' (Japanese type).
