Clematis 'Musashino' (Takeuchi)
Japanese large-flowered variety, tepals light reddish purple with characteristically flecked middle bar. The sepals are pointed and somewhat cupped. Anthers reddish purple. This cultivar is not to be confused with another Japanese cultivar (see 'Musashino' (Sakuri)) whose transliteration confusingly comes out the same in Western script - though they are clearly different in the original language. This cultivar was grown by some plant lovers in the northern Saitama Prefecture in Japan, but its origin is unknown. It dates back to the 1940s or even earlier so it is unlikely to have been imported; more likely it was a patens variant collected from the wild.
The form is named after a local clematis group.
