Clematis 'Madame van Houtte'

Large to very large white flowers shaded purple or mauve. Grey-purple anthers on whitish filaments. Particularly large stamens (to 2.4cm). In 1912, William Robinson in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' lists this cultivar as "trusted to give lovely effects if culture and position be all [it] deserves." Although this form is occasionally found listed in specialist catalogues it seems to be something of a rarity.
