This is a Japanese cultivar that was sent to Siebold in Leiden by Textor, a plant hunter. The name is in honour of the Dutch Queen Sophie of Würtenberg.
In the plate from L'Illustration Horticole 1854, 'Sophia' is the left-hand flower.
