Clematis 'Star of India' (Japanese type)
This Japanese cultivar is not the same as that raised by Cripps in the UK. Its identity is unknown but it is quoted as a parent, most notably of 'Asao'. Wim Snoeijer in his 1991 Clematis Index says that there are two forms found in Japan under this name - one dull purple with a red-purple bar, the other brighter purple with a duller violet-red bar.
