Clematis 'John Gould Veitch'

Large double or semi-double flowers, initially lavender blue but later fading rather to white with a hint of blue. Creamy-yellow anthers. Some growers claim to be able to detect a scent. Collected in Japan by Robert Fortune in 1862 this is a (semi-) double form of C. patens.

It has been suggested that this is the same form as C. patens 'Ruriokoshi', but this remains a speculation.
