Medium sized, carmine- to very dark-red flowers with a satin-like appearance. The tepals are edged and veined in deeper red. Deep reddish-purple, almost black, anthers. Raised by Magnus Johnson in 1952, from the same batch of C. viticella 'Grandiflora Sanguinea' seedlings that produced 'Sodertalje'. Often confused, in name and appearance, with 'Kermesina'. The main differences are that 'Carmencita' has a greater depth of colouring and that the pistils (the female part of the flower, in the middle of the stamens) are much longer than the stamens, whereas those of 'Kermesina' are almost equal in length. The tepals of 'Carmencita' also lack the typical white spot near the base characteristic of 'Kermesina'. Named 'Carmencita' because this clematis reminded Magnus Johnson of "dark-eyed Spanish beauties".
