Medium to large, velvety purple flowers. Described in The Clematis as a Garden Flower by Moore and Jackman (1872) as "Very rich, blackish mulberry purple". Greenish-yellow stamens. Awarded a First Class Certificate when shown at South Kensington, London, in 1866.
