Large deep purple flowers with red or purple anthers. The variety has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In 1912, William Robinson in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' lists this cultivar as "trusted to give lovely effects if culture and position be all [it] deserves." The flowers can fade to almost white in full sun. Can be treated as a Group 2 to get large, early flowers.
