Small to medium flowers, opening dark purple becoming cobalt blue. Dark blue pistils. Filaments white, tinged violet at the base, connective violet. The breeder places this cultivar in the 'Jackmanii group' which is part of the wider 'Late large-flowered group'.

Unusually this clematis is sold under two trade names HAPPY BIRTHDAY and JEWEL OF MERK. The latter is in honour of a Mrs Pawson, living in the UK, who celebrated her 70th birthday in June 2009. Merk is her pet name.
