Clematis 'Otto Fröbel'

Very large flowers. Pearly white tepals, initially tinged pale mauve, with a broad cream bar which is often tinged pink at the tips. The tepals have beautiful wavy edges. The stamens are prominent and provide a dramatic contrast, pink filaments with deep brownish-red anthers. A striking hybrid of C. lanuginosa x C. patens. Raised by Lemoine et Fils, Nancy, France in 1865 and named in honour of Mr. Froebel, a prominent Zurich nurseryman of that era. In 1912, William Robinson in his book 'The Virgin's Bower' lists this cultivar as "trusted to give lovely effects if culture and position be all [it] deserves."
