Clematis 'Mevrouw Oud'
Medium to large, milk white flowers with dark brown or reddish anthers.
Rudi Kroon, who worked at the raiser's nursery, tells us it was "in early 1949 that a seedling, of which one parent was 'Huldine', was considered to be propagatedÂ… It was eventually named after the wife of [a] prominent and good friend of Mr Maarse, Mrs Oud. Mr Oud was another nurseryman specialising in the culture of tropical plants, especially orchids." 'Mevrouw' is the Dutch equivalent of Mrs'. The date 1949 anticipates by three years the date given in the International Clematis Register and Checklist 2002. In a subsequent e-mail Mr Kroon confirmed that the second parent is 'Marie Boisselot'. Our thanks to Stephen Butler for helping us track down a photograph of this cultivar.
